ACTIVITY : ROBOTIC WORKSHOP

The Technology Department has organized with the students of 2nd ESO a robotics workshop within the programme Approaching Robotics to Real Life included in STM Comenius.

The robotics workshop is framed within the First Lego League to be held on March 16 at the University of Cartagena. Robots are made of Lego pieces.

This year the scientific part of the First Lego League deals with natural disasters.  That’s why students have prepared the robots with the following missions:

  – Rescues of people and animals.

-Displacement of buildings that are in sensitive areas.

  -Humanitarian aid to victims.

ACTIVITY : CONFERENCE ON NATURAL DISASTERS

The professor of internal geodynamics at University of Alicante, Don Pedro Alfaro García , has held in our school a conference on the causes of natural disasters led to students of high school education .

In his presentation, Professor Alfaro has analyzed four well-known ” natural disasters ” : 2004 Indian Tsunami , Hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake and wash mud from Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

These natural disasters were analyzed from different points of view : degree of knowledge that the scientific community had of these phenomena before they occurred , measures that could have been taken if there had been the proper protocols , the level of scientific dissemination of the  behavior of natural agents , etc …

In the second part of the talk Professor Alfaro focused on the study of the earthquake in the town of Lorca.

ACTIVITY : AIR FRESHENERS WORKSHOP

The Department of Physics and Chemistry has organized with students of 3rd and 4th ESO a workshop for making air fresheners within the program of approaching Chemistry to Real Life included in STM Comenius.

The materials that have been used to create 50 cl fresheners were the  following:

  – A  50 cl Spray bottle.

  -17%  Alcohol.

  -3%  essence.

  -80% distilled water

 Preparation Method:

Distilled water, essence and alcohol are mixed  together to prepare the freshener.

Different aromatic plants essences were used for the preparation: Roses, thyme and rosemary.

ACTIVITY :BATH SALTS WORKSHOP

The Department of Natural Sciences has organized a scented bath salt bombs workshop with secondary school students within the programme approaching  Science to Real Life included in STM Comenius.

The materials that have been used to prepare these aromatic salt pumps are:

  -bicarbonate.

  – citric acid.

  – food-coloring.

  -aromatic essences.

  -molds.

 Method of preparation:

All the components are mixed and students use molds to obtain salts pumps with different geometrical shapes.

ACTIVITY : PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST “NATURE’S FURY OF FIRST LEGO LEAGUE”

On Sunday March 16th the team SRG Medilego Mediterranean IES won the Scientific Project at Nature’s Fury Regional Championship First Lego League held in Cartagena UPCT.

ACTIVITY : PARTICIPATION IN THE MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD OF MURCIA REGION.

Some students of IES MEDITERRÁNEO participated in the Mathematical Olympiad of Murcia Region which took place in the Polytecnical University of Cartagena.

Students and teachers enjoy the activities and have a great day.

ACTIVITY :  VISIT TO “CAMPUS INGENIERÍA 2014″

Student of IES MEDITERRÁNEO visited a science fair in Cartagena held by Polytechnical University of Cartagena where the could enjoy and learn from the different experiences and projects exhibited related to STM.
Here you have some impressions of our students on the visit to the fair.

ACTIVITY :  VISIT TO THE SCIENCE FAIR IN MURCIA

semana de la ciencia06

Students of 4º ESO assisted  tothe science fair held in Murcia where  there were stands from universities, high schools, different science associations, foundations and some companies with different themes all of them related to STM.

ACTIVITY :  VISIT TO CEBAS CENTER.

Students of IES MEDITERRÁNEO visited the center of soil science and applied biology where they learn about contamination on soil and analisys of waters.

ACTIVITY: TALK ABOUT ORGANIC SCHOOL GARDENS.

On Thursday February 26 was held at 12.20 h in the Classroom Emilio Fructuoso a talk on organic school gardens by Domingo Garcia Alcaraz, coach of Organic Farming Council of the Region of Murcia.

ACTIVITY: 3D PRINTER WORKSHOP.

A 3D workshop was held in IES MEDITERRÁNEO. In this workshop teachers and students learn the basics to use a 3D printer.

ACTIVITY: POLYMER WORKSHOP.

A polymer is a chemical substance which molecules form for the union of many smallest molecules so called monomers. The process of joining monomers is called a polymerization. The molecules of polymer contain between 1.000 and 10.000 monomers joined, can be synthetic or natural. Some students work on this workshop and here you have some results of their experiments.

ACTIVITY: “MATHEMATICAL WORKSHOP EMILIO FRUCTUOSO

This year the second mathematical workshop EMILIO FRUTUOSO has been one of the main activities of our Comenius project, “Science, Technology and Maths applied to real life”, we conducted this workshop to bring math to our students a fun way through games, experiments, magic, kitchen … and into their daily life related contexts.

THE CYCLOID:

We build a cycloid from a ring of 1 meter in diameter, and our partners, Juanje alias “Braquis” and Pedro, alias “Tauto” showed them a practical way, some of the curious properties of this curve, brachistochrone and tautochrone using some toy cars.

ANAMORPHOSIS WORKSHOP:

With the help of a sphere made of our 3D printer and a flashlight, anamorphosis expert Victor managed to prove that the project the sphere on the plane angles of the geodesic curves of the walls of the sphere, become right angles to the stereographic projection. These projection techniques are the basis for some types of cartographic maps. We also use photographs of landmarks and our own students, made at that time, to see the properties of the Anamorphosis.

CODES AND DOMINOES:

Laura Navarro and Ramon Rosa, relying on information boards showed the students the different algorithms used to calculate control digit ISBN and bank accounts, letter of our ID and barcode, so present and important in our daily lives. The students had the opportunity to apply these algorithms.

They also played at various mathematical dominoes.

3D IMAGES:

Antonio Cantero, assigned QR (Quick Response) codes to different three-dimensional images. These images were projected, so that students manipulating some cards with the codes could be viewed from different angles all the faces of the different images.

MATHEMAGIC:

Antonio Cantero and Veronica Sanchez made several magic tricks with cards, all based on mathematics. They also guessed secret numbers and performed tricks telepathy. We also have spontaneous collaboration of a former colleague Luis Gil, who with his talent magician performed some tricks with coins based on parity.

CONTEST MATHEMATICAL VOCABULARY:

Jose Antonio Gimenez and Veronica Sanchez, presented a contest in which students competed guessing words associated with their mathematical definitions given its first letter.

14 Emilio Fructuoso                    15 Emilio Fructuoso

MATHEMATICS AND COOKING:

Maria Salud Sanchez, had a recipe for “coconuts” nothing more and nothing less than 1,000 people. Students had to adapt to 6 people. Once made the calculations, the students created the “coconuts”, previously weighing the ingredients with appropriate units and then, of course, taste the delicious food.
